Everything you didn't know you wanted to know about David Lynch, his life, art and films. This is a fascinating and enlightening book. It helps of course if you're familiar with his movies (and his music) but even if you're not you should get a lot out of this read. You may come out the other side of this book a different person (and I'm only half-joking about that). Worst case, only your doppelganger will come out. ;)My love for and appreciation of his work have deepened, thanks to this reading experience. Kristine McKenna has a clear and engaging voice, and Lynch's chapters are --what else?-- Lynchian. This is a wonderful book. I could say a lot more but this woodsman's at my door asking, "Gotta light?"

Ok, but a slow read with nothing much that’s new. It was interesting to read that Lynch struggles with money and anger, but if you’ve read much about him, you’ll know the rest. The format is quite good - some biographical background and then Lynch goes over it in his own way - but that means it’s a very thin overview. Twin Peaks is covered in just a few pages. It would have been great to get some detail, some more anecdotes, but you finish the book feeling like you read an overview rather than a full biography.

This is a really cool little book. The format is fresh and innovative. There have been some really mind blowing passages from Lynch himself but beyond that it's a fairly standard biography. In some ways it must be difficult to write a deep biography about someone knowing 1. they have final say over what you write and 2. in the next chapter they can disagree, correct, or embellish what you just wrote. I liked reading about David's early life, but was surprised at his treatment of his romantic partners. All in all, an enjoyable read.

Wonderful book about a national treasure. Since Eraserhead I've been a fan of Lynch but not a fanatic, so there's tons of stuff I didn't know about. The format is great. While reading it I've been re-watching everything in order. Except for the parts of season two of Twin Peaks in which he wasn't involved or couldn't redeem, all of Lynch's film and tv work seems better with age and not only do repeat viewings always offer new insights and feels, watching it all chronologically showcases the incredible synergy of his oevre. I've also watched as many of the shorts as I could find, as they're new to me. "The Cowboy and The Frenchman" -- wow!!! Reading and watching and reading and watching again, it's been a joyful experience.I especially loved the parts about his process as a director and what the actors had to say about him. And about his art studies, mentored by a man named Bushnell. (!!!!) I had no idea how much he creates, not just paintings and drawings and sound but also furniture and sculpture and all kinds of things. The statue that so intrigues Dougie, Lynch made it. Helloooooooooooo! He's so gifted and so wonderfully weird. The book is filled with nuggets of his eccentricity, And his personal life, full of tics and odd habits and always women, he's so irresistible.Read it! In a million years I never would have guessed that Naomi Watts and Laura Harring were actually wearing the rabbit suits. They did it for David! People who work with Lynch love him and will give him whatever he wants creatively, and it's so clear why that is when you read the book. This close-up reveals that David Lynch himself is, to use one of his expressions, "beyond the beyond."

Well written and the perfect format for a Lynch bio. You have each chapter in his life split between the biographer's well researched and straight forward telling, and then you get Lynch's subject, off the cuff (it reads like he just sat down and spoke into a tape recorder) version of the same period. He goes off on any number of interesting and funny tangents and it all just works. I honestly can't recall ever reading a more interesting and engaging biography of anyone. It's got just enough B&W photos sprinkled throughout to augment the text and it feels like the biographer literally talked to everyone Lynch ever knew or worked with (and if they were not alive then she talked to someone close to them).

Written for the hardcore Lynch fan, this was a hard book to get through. Jaggedly written, it takes us through Lynch’s life as told by people who have only adoring things to say. It did make me watch/rewatch some of his films, though, which reinforced my ambivalence to his writing and directing style.Talk to people who have been on his crews and you’ll find people who find his last minute dialog and set/lighting changes frustrating, reinforced by having to stand at the ready for Lynch to return from somewhere off set where he could meditate. By reading the book I learned a lot about someone I really didn’t care about before or after. But I did learn a lot.

Originality. Used to greatly enhance my knowledge of the subject and appreciation of the writers talent. Also gave audiobooks version as a birthday gift. It too was very highly thought of. Ms. McKenna's well modulated reading is clear, concise and utterly bereft of the Umms, Aahhs and Youknows so pervasive in spoken word formats (radio. T.V. Public Speakers etc) heard today. Brava!

This is interesting narrative about Lynch made from to sources: others first and Lynch himself second. Got into Lynch mostly after viewing Twin Peaks The Return recently which has made me a big fan of Lynch work.
