Do not waste your money. While the authors love for carving is evident, calling this a beginner's handbook is misleading. Very little of the book is dedicated to actual carving tools and technique, most of the book is about carving clubs.
Though the book feels a touch dated, it does have a wealth of information that is timeless regarding several styles of wood carving. It's a good go to book for general information on just about every aspect of carving. A lot of nice patterns to get one started and to refer back to over time. Definitely a keeper.
At a first glance using the Look Inside feature, this book looked like it would be great for me at starting a new hobby of woodcarving. I read the book the first night it came, and it certainly provided good tips, but didn't really do more than scratch the surface. It has many patterns for the different types of woodcarving, line, relief carving, birds, figures, etc... and introduces each type very vaguely. I was hoping for a little more information on technique, but I suppose that will come with practice.
It feels a little dated as I read it, but I do think that the information inside is as current as any, and certainly useful to the modern wood carver. Projects could be retooled to be more appealing to modern people, especially young and urban people, but for an adult that wants to learn, this is not really a problem.
I already have a semi-hobby of carving relief and walking sticks. Highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking about starting such a hobby. Even though I subscribe to wood carving magazines and research on-line, I still loved the book for its presentation and patterns. Very good. Only caveat: There is no mention of necessary safety precautions for wood carving such as the use of Kevlar gloves, avoiding personal injury by improper cutting methods, how to grip the tools, etc. Otherwise a great starter (and experienced) reference.
I got this as a gift for my dad who just took up woodcarving the last couple of years. He really loves it and it has given him lots of great ideas and suggestions. It is great for beginners.
Bought for my 10-year old grandson who loves working with his hands ... on something else besides joy sticks & computer buttons! This is a great reference for him & his dad. Yes, the pictures are very dated & in black n white. BUT woodcarving is woodcarving. Nothing high tech about it so the information from the 1970s is still valid & useful today. The step-by-step directions, the designs & plans are very adequate, especially for beginners. My grandson has been carving for about a month now & still goes back to read this reference. That's a good recommendation
I wouldn't say this book is for a beginner like it states. Its a little difficult to understand and I would prefer more pictures of the process.
