I had seen the glowing reviews for a seemingly niche series that was constantly in my recommended, yet I never checked it out past a few clicks. I got some Amazon credit for the holidays and decided to invest in the first installment. I was missing out on so much. So much in fact, here I sit having just finished Volume 1, filling my Amazon cart with the next few volumes because I'm so eager to read more. The marks of a great mangaka are all over this thing, and while it may be not be listed with the industry titans yet, I'm certain this series will be deemed a classic. Good work, Kodansha, and good work to the fans for keeping this thing in publication so that readers like me could get the chance to enjoy it as well.
My husband picked up this book at our local library, and I was surprised because it's MANGA! This guy is usually reading NF books about History and Military History, so I was surprised - kind of. Then I found out it's about the Vikings and the author, or manga-ka, did his research, so I guess it sort of works as history! Anywho, I was only going to read a little bit to see what it's about, and as of today, I just finished reading book 8. It's crazy! Book nine should arrive at our house soon, which at that time, I will be turning on the tv for the kiddos so I can read it uninterrupted. Yeah, it's that good! The books are thick and hardcover so they are a little different from other thinner paperback manga. There is a little bit of nudity in the series, but nothing vulgar. There is quite a bit of fighting, especially in the earlier books but not especially gory. I would definitely recommend this book!
Makoto's Yukimura's Viking saga is interesting in how developed the characters are and how much research Makoto Yukimura put into building the saga is admirable. The art is good for anime art, but still has a lot of the hallmarks of the genre in ways that can render elements of the story cartoonish at points. However, the art is highly detailed, the action very well-rendered, and the characters are very expressive. The violence is heavy, but it is not nearly as graphic as a comic like Berserk or Claymore, which this was weirdly compared to in some reviews I have read.The characters and setting are interesting, Thorfinn's motives are rendered clearly as is Askeladd. The world building is very detailed and that is where the research really shines. A recommend.
Wow! I have heard so many people talk about this manga, so I decided that I would try reading it. I bought the first book just in case I did not like it. I am going to purchase the rest of this series! I love the fact that you are learning about the Vikings while being told a story. I am excited to see how this all unfolds!!
Tried this title on a whim and wow, what a surprise! Where has Makoto Yukimura been all my life? This is truly superb work! I'm pretty sure I'm going to read and reread every single volume of Vinland Saga, it's that good!
I wasn't sure about this one, as I'd never head of it. Amazon suggested it to me based upon my buying history, and I was intrigued. I did a little research, saw some reviews, and ordered it. Read it within a few hours.It's fascinating because it's fiction with some limited historical accuracy. It's much like Lone Wolf and Cub in that respect (some historical accuracy), though both manga are entirely different. Vikings instead of ronin, yet still makes use of similar themes; honor, revenge, assassins, etc. But the characters and source material are a nice change of pace and an interesting twist on manga.I liked it so much that I ordered the second and third books as well. Some compare it to Berserk but I feel that the series are nothing alike. Berserk focuses more on shock and the supernatural, while this has little or none of that. Maybe the themes change as the series continues, as it's my understanding that the content went from shonen to seinen in the first year. Some of the images are almost Miura-quality in detail though, so I expect cool things from Yakimura as it progresses. I've always wanted to read his Planetes, though it's out of print. Maybe I'll try to source used copies.
I can only hope to draw this well in my lifetime, let alone tell such a riveting story in just the first volume of the manga! Absolutely inspired.
If you don't read this amazing manga you're missing out on a creative masterwork by an incredibly talented artist. I can say that this is one of the best written and illustrated mangas out there today. Every last detail was taken into account from the armor to the Viking ships and even the houses. This is a must read.
