Review

Lots of books teach us the reasons why writing matters, yet Colleen adds a new reason to the list: Writing can be a lever that lifts our kids′ reading work. And that can happen even when kids are not writing about reading, but are, instead, doing their own important writing work. Once again, Colleen nudges us forward. Author: Lucy CalkinsColleen offers literacy teachers a valuable comprehension instruction "hack": help students get inside the brains of the writers they read by doing the same kind of writing themselves before they read. She argues convincingly that the more students understand how something was made, the better they’ll understand it when they encounter it as readers. She doesn’t just offer compelling research to prove it; she offers teachers dozens of paired lessons so that students will read and write information texts with more power. The lessons are streamlined to allow students maximum time for practice and application, and to help the busy teacher go from the page to the classroom quickly and almost effortlessly. I encourage all upper elementary and middle school teachers to give these lesson sets a try! Author: Jennifer SerravalloMost professional books on teaching nonfiction focus on teaching writing or reading, but not both. In this unique book, Colleen Cruz shows us how to teach complementary writing and reading lessons that will help students use what they’re learning about nonfiction writing to help them become more powerful nonfiction readers. Author: Carl AndersonThis book refuels your energy to think about the way you plan and teach reading and writing. Colleen holds strong to the tenets of workshop―choice, voice, and agency―then beautifully blends the lessons and theory with her vast experience in classrooms, new research on writing and reading, and the dance we do with it all now in the digital world. The structure of the book and the lessons are completely accessible for all teachers, the way Colleen believes the learning and craft to be accessible for all students. It’s a gamechanger for those looking to augment and reflect on their current workshop model and for those who are going to give it a go. Colleen is with you every step of the way. Author: Sara K. The author has helped me realize more possibilities for ELA instruction

Even though I teach kindergarten now instead of high school English, I still enjoy reading books about teaching writing. This book makes so much sense! Teach writing about nonfiction before you read it. It gives the students a knowledge base that is a perfect support to the reading. The opposite of what we usually do, but extremely effective. I have found the paired lessons so interesting that I have modified them for my kindergarten students. My students love to write and they love these modified lessons. For each lesson the author starts off with what she says to students to begin the lesson. Again, I have to modify a little with this part, but not much. Our writing is then whole class with me at the chart paper. Next, students write in groups. I can't recommend this book enough. It really makes me want to teach high school again.

I had the privilege of working with Colleen Cruz in New York City for ten years. During this time, she served as a staff developer for Teachers College/Columbia University, supporting the teaching of writing and reading in the school where I taught. I moved out of state and continued to implement what I had learned in my new teaching position, and my students' scores went up two grade levels after the first year! I credit the focus on writing that Ms. Cruz helped me develop in my practice. This book is a treasure and is put together with the greatest of care. There is a script for each lesson for your guidance and inspiration. There is also a link in the book to extremely helpful videos that demonstrate the method in action. The writing lessons are matched with reading lessons that would naturally follow. Part of the key is that the students LOVE learning this way. If you have to choose one book to jumpstart or strengthen your teaching of literacy, this is the one. Thank you, Colleen!

Colleen Cruz has literally hit a home run with this book about how Nonfiction Writing can help the authors READ better and offers us 50 paired lessons to do so. By digging into what makes nonfiction writing more powerful, all authors can more quickly recognize the same craft work in the books they read. Many folks believe reading in the genre comes first, but Colleen's lessons provide a different entry point for writers. The power of nonfiction reading comes from first understanding how it was written! If you are a workshop teacher, these lessons will be invaluable because their streamlined format will transfer to other texts so you can keep true to voice, choice and agency! If you are just beginning with workshop, these lessons will give you a framework to improve both writing and reading! Don't wait! Colleen will be coaching you every step of the way!

As a teacher, I love to read professional development books to look for new and exciting ways to teach reading and writing. This particular book is unique in that it explicitly connects the skills gained through writing to improved reading comprehension and analysis skills. I've seen this skillset taught in reverse (emulate what you've read in your writing), but this combination was fresh and quite intriguing. The intended grade-level for this book is 3-8, but I honestly feel that 5-8 is a more accurate band. The book features 28 lessons that pair a writing and reading component to teach the desired skill (say, Introduction and Conclusions). The lessons progress through the writing process: generating ideas, drafting, revising/editing, and then publishing. Each lesson is clearly laid out with the purpose, step-by-step instructions, material list, and (frequently though not always) student examples. There's a lot of creativity in this book. For example, using Lego blocks to illustrate how an author stacks information. Great idea! Here's what I am not thrilled with... the word for word script (with action items italicized) that goes with each lesson. It feels so belittling when professional development books do this. As an educated professional, please give me the content and let me decide how to deliver to my students. Maybe this is helpful for first-year teachers? For me, it is just very off-putting and is the reason I only gave 4 stars.

Research has long acknowledged the reciprocal nature of reading and writing. But in this wonderful new book, Writers Read Better, Colleen Cruz has given us new insight by approaching writing as the inroad to reading. In a series of wonderful paired lessons for nonfiction texts, Colleen shows us what this new view can look like in practice. This lessons are so open-ended that teachers can immediately apply their learning this flexible framework while still maintaining their own professional decision-making role. This book is sure to engage educators in many in depth conversations!

This book takes an unusual approach of writing to read in creating engaging non-fiction for the middle grades. But many of the tools, structure, charting, referencing other online and off-line texts, and engaging reader interests will serve the students who use this text throughout their lifetime. This is true whether they become scientists, journalists, teachers or others who will need to do engaging expository writing.

Good concept: the more students understand HOW something was made, the morethey will be able to understand it when they are exposed to it as readers. There are paired lessons so that students will read and write their own information texts more skillfully. Sample language for teachers to use and planning/prep tips. The book is well-laid out, making it easier to use 28 lesson that pair writing and reading. Suggested titles are in the resource section.
