I almost didn't buy this book because It was kind of expensive. I liked another book this author wrote so decided just to go for it and I'm glad I did. It was very much worth it,I got interested in this trial near the end.This book filled in all of the holes and gave me the complete background on the case.I love Hogan's style of writing. No filler just the facts but put together in a way that's interesting and almost novelish.I was totally sucked in to this book...read it in two days.I recommend it highly.
This is a gripping and fascinating true story. Well written and researched. Hogan provides a richly detailed account of the shocking death of Michele MacNeill and the subsequent investigation of her doctor husband, when her family begins to suspect him of murder. This book succeeds because the background information is so comprehensive and interesting. Martin MacNeill has the illusion of success and prosperity, but beneath his carefully constructed facade, there is a dark mind with an apparently limitless capacity for evil. Psychopathy is so difficult to fathom, the idea that someone can exist without a conscience and still masquerade with any degree of normalcy is utterly chilling. I am intrigued by the number of people who were able to sense MacNeill's darkness early on and by those who never saw it. What makes some people aware of evil, while others remain oblivious? Psychopathy is so incomprehensible, and yet people throughout MacNeill's life were given glimpses of his true nature. Still, it is the totality of his deeds that remains so horrifying.For those who are riveted by the true crime genre, this one does not disappoint.It is a fast, intelligent read that's difficult to put down.
This book was thoroughly interesting to read from beginning to the very end. The facts were hard to believe but one must remember that people can be be exceptionally cruel to their fellow man! It was sad to know that this woman simply loved her husband and wanted to do anything she could do to keep him in love with her. While she did not really want nor need plastic surgery, she felt maybe she could secure his love once again and he would quit cheating on her. Such was not the case. One wonders how much did she really know at the time of her demise! Was there something a neighbor, family member, close friend could have done to avoid her being killed. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a well written True Crime story.
Don't let my 4/5 rating in any way dissuade you: I'm saving my five star reviews these days for classic literature. This is once again a captivating yarn by a master storyteller. This time it faux doctor Martin MacNeil who murdered his wife to be with his mistress.I've read a number of these "true crime novelist" authors now and Shanna Hogan is perhaps the best of the bunch. She's thorough in he research, and does a good job of giving us a victim to root for, and a dirt bag to root against without revealing too much of the trial outcome up front. How could it be improved?The author could be a bit less prejudicial. Books read best when the reader is allowed to make up his or her own mind. Then again, we want to be in league with the storyteller so that's a nearly impossible task. Secondly I found Ms. Hogan's victory dance retelling the story with extreme prejudice in the final chapter a little unnecessary. After a while you're beating a dead horse. But it in no way spoiled the book.This book helped me understand some of the abusive people from my own past. That was a surprisingly beneficial side effect. Put this one on your "to read" list.
This book was very well written. It held my interest and was at times so horrific it was unbelievable but sadly true. This story tells how sick and disturbed someone can be with an evil and depraved mind. This doctor destroyed everyone in his path. I enjoy true murder mysteries but this story was over the top. It was extremely morbid and worse than I expected. Still it was interesting but cannot say enjoyable as that would be irreverent. If this type of story intrigues you, I honestly recommend this book.
I typically do not read true-crime stories but decided to give this a shot when I saw a recommendation on Facebook. Having a cousin whose family lives a couple blocks from the MacNeill home in Pleasant Grove, I thought it would be an interesting read. Boy was I right! The author laid out the details of the MacNeill family history and Martin's trials in an easy to follow fashion. I am impressed with the strength and dedication of Michele's sister and daughters who resolved to do all they could to get justice for Michele. I hope they have found some peace in their lives.
One of the better written true crime stories to come out in the last few years. The author took the time to give us background of the main characters so in some way we can understand the crime. I'm not interested in reading court transcripts which so many true crime books have utilized and includes as major sections of their books. I want the nitty, gritty details that helps me understand the victim as well as the motivation of the perp. Shanna Hogan does wonderful research by pulling from many sources (and not just court records or newspaper articles). When an author can keep me interested, I'm impressed. True crime readers put this author's name down as one of the better true crime authors out there.
This is a very thoroughly researched and engaging true crime book. The author brings to life the conflicts, details, and emotions of this tragedy, as well as developing the people whose life it affected. It is also engaging from the first page and the flow of events reads like a novelThe author does take some liberties in being omniscient, suggesting what people at times are thinking, but I can give her some slack for artistic license.
