Not a bad addition to the urban fantasy genre, but not a great one either. I liked the story overall, but had a hard time caring much about the characters. One thing I couldn't understand was why none of the characters had a cell phone. Nowhere that I noticed did the author state that the book takes place in the 80's or 90's. So, I kept wondering why they kept leaving voice messages on answering machines for each other. And it happened multiple times. I will say the best part for me was the ending. The author did the unexpected. Had I been more invested in the characters, it might have been even more profound. I'll probably give the next book in the series a chance to see if the author can improve this. A lot of people compare it to the Dresden series, and I can see why. And hopefully it will be like that series, where the first book was so-so, but continued to get better and better.
I agree with the other reviewers. The biggest issue with this novel is the lack of depth and definition on the various occult/magical aspects. The second largest issue is the end- to begin with it is rushed. Then there are some issues- particularly the character 'cleansing' and the time jump between books. Add in the fact that Stone was able to do what something that a group could not. There was no mystery and it was all pretty typical. The book is not terrible. The characters are human - not infallible. Some of the characters are even interesting- Stone, Trin, Meagan.
If you have enjoyed Jim Butcher's books then you will probably enjoy this. The British Mage who lives in America and works as a professor of the Occult at a college agrees to take on an apprentice. The apprentice comes with his own baggage. Enter an old friend who wants the Mage to convince his elderly relative does not have a ghost in her mansion. Grab this novel to find out what happens to the Mage and friends. You will not be bored.
A fresh look at a tried-and-true theme...the mage and the apprentice. This mage, however, is "cool". He is a professor of occult arts and wears cool clothes, a bit eccentric and from the UK teaching in the US. The apprentice is at a crossroads in his life, needing mentoring in more than just magic. The writing is upbeat, engaging and kinda hard to put down...I'd recommend it.
Reluctant hero, solid modern-magic detective-ish story. It's not high octane and kick ass (you need Harry Dresden or Kate Daniels for that)--but it's definitely a solid, interesting read.MAIN CHARACTERDr. Alistair Stone is an academician, a professor of Occult Studies, who hasn't done much magic in recent years (distracted by professordom & a girlfriend who doesn't believe in magic). He loves teaching, loves magic, and has a reasonably mundane life (for a mage). He feels very much like an ordinary guy (because, face it, ordinary people all have quirks), rather than a lone crusader against the darkness. He's not a "hero," just a guy who steps up when he discovers there's something going on that no one else can do anything about--except (maybe) him. But then, that's how heroes are born... *Note: Even on his best days, his WORST suit is battle magicPLOTComplicating life as a professor, love-life with a woman who doesn't believe in magic, and trying to help out the people who need him, Dr. Stone lands an innocent apprentice who is at a particularly vulnerable place in life (no dad, mom is dying of illness). Everything is going relatively well until the darkness Alistair Stone has been hunting starts hunting him--and his apprentice.GENERAL NOTESAlistair Stone feels a lot like Sherlock Holmes in that he is academically minded: Give him a puzzle and he will go to insane lengths to solve it (gradually becoming emotionally invested in those he's trying to help/save). Damsel in distress, meh. He isn't the black-and-white type but he's generally a good guy. He knows his limits and generally knows better than to push himself over the edge. He's not the defiant, conflicted, or dynamic sort. Just an introspective Brit who enjoys California and ONLY helps because someone has to... with a balance of academic interest and slightly detached personal concern. (General notes written after reading book 1 & book 2)
If you like Harry Dresden and The Dresden files, or Nate Garrett in the Hellequin series than this series is for you, the best books are not read, they are lived, if I am there, in that world and not really conscious of the fact I am reading until the last page, that's a good book, you know what I am talking about, this series of books does that for me, I don't think I will ever give 5 stars but only because sometimes the author makes me do stupid things. Know what I mean!
This was a good read with lots of promise for the future installments there was plenty of action and the characters were well developed. The main character is nicely imperfect and the baddies are convincingly nasty. I am looking forward to sampling more of R.L Kings work.
Overall, I found this a really fun and compelling story. In many respects I would put it in the same category that writers like Jim Butcher, Steve McHugh, Benedict Jacka, and Kevin Hearne. I did the combination Kindle reading with Whispersync and Audible. I just wish more of his books would be released through Audible.
