This is the kind of book that in the old days when we had bookstores that you could pick up and skim in about 10 minutes standing at the store..Starts off strong and sounds like it will be really scientifically supported. Then it doesn't ever really give much support for anything and gets into some lengthy tangents- Nixon etc. Then towards the end the writer shows his hand and says that yes there is some good technical liecatching techniques he can teach you, but you will have to go to his website to buy that instruction.
Ekman is the master when it comes to Lie Spotting and Truth Telling - but this is not light reading. Very academic - and dense reading. If you are interested in this topic, best to find other resources that have distilled the info down to bite size pieces - for example, find interviews he's done or articles citing this book. Of course, if you're writing a paper - you'll want this book as a primary source - but would not advise for the average, curious reader.
A maelstrom of original and ground-breaking information never seen before it was published some 30 years ago; by the man who "Lie to Me" was based upon. The first three chapters can be dry and redundant but they lay the foundation for what a lie is and what types there are. Chapter 4 gets into the meat of identification and can leave you exhausted after just a few pages; the 3 pages that describe a chosen 18 types of smiles, for example. And the long chapter on polygraphs (which I thought I'd end up merely flipping through) wound up being the most interesting section of the book, with much of it still relevant for today. The real-life historical examples (Hitler/Chamberlain, Watergate figures, murderers, and philanderers)used throughout work much better than the lies and liars he provides from literature (Updike, Shakespeare, and others). A later edition with actual photos of micro-expressions instead of the sparse pencil drawings contained in this edition will prove much more useful. A MUST-HAVE on the shelf of any sideline-psychologist.
I have most of Ekman's books, everytime I have them all he writes another, but this is probably his best for the layperson.His older books are instructional, but his writing is more academic and they are sometimes a dry read. In this book Ekman shines and goes beyond simple instruction and research. Ekman provides an a fun to read analysis of the motivations and techniques of dectecting lies.The most important message of all in this book is that there is no 100% surefire way to detect lying in everyone all the time. There are methods that are 100% if the person exhibits them, but not everyone does. He is highly critical of those who are trying to sell the world on a boilerplate 100% accurate detection method. His discussion of polygraphs is riveting.I loaned this book to my daughter and she never gave it back, so that is a 10 star endorsement.This book has something for everyone and is well written.
This book is about some very fascinating ideas in improving human interactions. Mainly, we need to look closely and without bias at other people with whom we interact, or we need to not look at them at all. Read the book and you'll see what I mean.The book can't quite get five stars from me. One of the very best features of this book is that the author periodically updates it. It is good to see the progress being made in the field of reading people's expressions. This is a real gift to Ekman's followers. On the down side, I found the book to generally be a bit tedious and a slower read than I wanted. This is a problem mainly with the original edition text. Overall, I am glad that I did read it and own it for reference.
If you work anywhere that knowing if someone’s telling the truth (schools, jails, prisons, customer service, etc.) or not is important, purchase this book. One has to be able to see the person to read their body language; this book tells you how. Invaluable to me as an educator in the prison system.
Without a doubt Dr. Ekman's work is intriguing and valuable. A student of behavioral and social science would find this work a catalyst for further study or a required read for current coursework. For the lie catching buff, as I describe myself, however, the many chapters of "how" may be less valuable than the "what." So, for my purpose, catching that boat dealer stumbling over his explanation of charges, how the research was done was not helpful for me. What a person does during deceit has been thoroughly highlighted in my copy which I will keep for a long time - no lie.
