About the Author
Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 20,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of a hardworking, well-traveled staff of 100 at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his partner Trish, son Andy, and daughter Jackie.Irish-American Pat O'Connor first journeyed to Ireland in 1981, and was hooked by the history and passion of the feisty Irish culture. Frequent return visits led to his partnership with Rick Steves and his work as a tour guide and coauthor of this book. Pat loves all things Hibernian (except the black pudding) and thrives on the adventures that occur as he annually slogs the bogs in search of new Irish travel discoveries.

This really is THE guide to travel in Ireland. Covers everything from details on different areas, what not to, what you can skip with limited time, where and what to eat, what to expect, trends, the people and a great sample itinerary. Worth it!
I ended up using a 20 year old Frommers more than this. Don't need the preachy asides just get me to the ferry on time please! He did have good advice on general travel. The thing is he skipped some attractions and pushed others based on his personal preferences. The Frommers three star two star one star method of telling you what are the must sees versus might likes works better and is way more complete and balanced. Best advice for Americans going to the republic of Ireland - give yourself more time than in the USA to get places! What would take a couple hours here could take the same or triple depending on where you are going from and to. Going to Dublin - no worries there is an M spoke leading to the hub. Going from/to anywhere else in the republic? That N might take all day and your stupid GPS will try to send you down an R that is not more than a rut with hedges and walls on both sides and an irishman coming around a blind corner on two wheels! Rick Steves is right that bed and breakfasts are the way to go for accommodations. Although we also enjoyed the local private hotels he recommended. You don't need to depend only on his recommendations about which BnBs are out there. 35 euros /head will get you decent accommodations in a place like Connemara with full Irish and local color - just check online reviews. All of the reviews of the bed and breakfasts we stayed at were spot on. Trip Advisor works well for that. Call them direct so they don't have to pay fees. Rick is right - they mostly only take cash! But you really can't throw a rock over there without hitting one B&B and then getting another with the ricochet. His advice to not make it a race to see every highlight is really good advice. You could spend a whole week in Dublin and just scratch the surface. You could spend a month in Donegal and not run out of history or beauty. So in the end I would say buy this but use it in conjunction with Frommer's or someone else...but most of all GO TO IRELAND!
Could not have lived without Rick Steves on our trip. He saved us time and showed us places to go we would have never seen on our own. It was so wonderful we could tour without a tour guide. Instead of being jealous of all the groups getting detailed tours of what we were looking at, we were relieved to be able to do some self-guided tours. Rock of Cashel was awesome. That is the only one I recommend the guided tour, which is included in price anyway. He also had great tips for places to eat and places to avoid. We didn't do any organized pub crawls. We preferred doing our own. :) Like he says, it was important to read it through a couple of times and while I thought there was no way I was going to rip up the pages, that is just what I ended up doing. You won't want to walk around touring with a whole book so instead of leaving/forgetting it in the car, bring the page you need. He also has emergency #'s, international #'s, etc. Currency info. Saved us from bringing euros. The ATM in the airport was perfect. DO what he says! We didn't stay in recommended hotels, but adapted it to our lifestyle and it worked nicely. HAVE FUN!
Going to Ireland for the first time this spring, so bought this for my wife as a Christmas gift...hoping it was worthy. She and I both agree it is. Rick Steves' insights are not available elsewhere...he knows what's up.
I'm probably the only person who does not like Rick's style of reviewing a country. He's very informative with places HE feels you should go. Other places that you may have on your itinerary -- crickets. He doesn't even mention them.My friend and I went to Western Ireland in May so I purchased this guide. To be fair, he did a nice job with Dingle, spot on in all aspects. But Ennis and Shannon not so much.I won't be purchasing Rick's books again. I'll go back to Fodors.
This book was fantastic for getting around Ireland. We found the information to be useful and accurate. My only complaint and the reason why I knocked one star off is because the book is written to follow one itinerary direction (Dublin - south east - south - south west - north west - cross east) and our itinerary was the exact opposite. I know you're wondering why this even matters but it does because a lot of the directions he provides you cannot reverse. Ireland doesn't have traditional addresses like in the US so it's quite hard to find a lot of locations - if you're relying on the car GPS, it won't come up. They'd come up on the phone but bc of roaming that wasn't possible mostly. The directions provided never worked from where we were coming from so we had to just make do. We basically used this book to help us decide which spots to hit.Anyway, the book is fantastic and was a great guide to getting us to key locations.
