Review
"I loved stepping back in time with Rolly Crump and learning about the development of such great Disneyland attractions as the Haunted Mansion and the Enchanted Tiki Room. He also paints a vivid and personal portrait of Walt Disney that I'm sure fans and admirers will savor as much as I did." - Leonard Maltin, Disney Historian and Film Critic"The most inspired, and inspiring, artist I've ever worked with was Rolly Crump. Period. I've always wondered how someone could have so much experience, and still retain a genuine sense of wonder and playfulness. Well, here's his story, and I loved every word of it. Lots of people talk about Walt Disney, but Rolly Crump can demonstrate the meaning of Walt Disney." - Jim Steinmeyer, former Imagineer"Everyone who knew Walt Disney knew him differently, and that is why I love to read the stories of people like Rolly Crump. Rolly was never a yes man to Walt, and Walt obviously admired him for that. It is amazing to read his memoirs and realize how many of the major parts of the Disney parks were the work of this one man. He is an Imagineer Extraordinaire." - Dave Smith, Chief Archivist Emeritus of the Walt Disney Archives"This anecdotal memoir by Disney Legend Rolly Crump shares never-before-told stories with such charm and candor that it is a 'must have' addition for every Disney fan's library." - Jim Korkis, Disney Historian and author of The Vault of Walt"It's Kind Of A Cute Story is a Disney memoir that stands heads and shoulders above the slew of small- and self-published books from the past year. It's also a book that surpasses most of the Disney Publishing releases and it raises the bar for how an artistic memoir should look. It is extremely entertaining and informative. I felt like I was sitting in Rolly's living room while he regaled me with these amazing tales of his life."- George Taylor, MiceChat.com

This book was fantastic. If you have ever wondered how the creative process at Disney worked in the '60s and '70s, here is your opportunity. Not only is this an autobiography of one of the greatest Imagineers out there, it also gives you a peak at other designers' features and flaws. You'll learn how an attraction is developed from concept to reality, and discover all the things that didn't come to pass in your favorite Disney rides and shows like It's a Small World, The Haunted Mansion and the Tiki Room. You'll also get a glimpse into what Walt Disney was really like and how he was able to bring out the best in the people who worked for him. You'll see what he was like behind the scenes and how different he was behind the camera instead of in front of it.The book is well-written. It feels like you are hearing stories from your grandpa about the good ol' days. Crump isn't afraid to tell it like it is though, you find out about the failures as much as you find out about the successes. You really get the feeling that he wants to share his experiences from the past to inspire creativity today.I'm recommending this book to all my friends who are Disney fans. Great work!
For the Disney fan this is a wonderful tale of "mini" stories with illustrations and photos. I feel like just the visual content makes this a "keeper" for your collection and future reference. The insights and behind the scenes stories really add context to the times and development of arguably the most storied franchise in the world.Rolly is a wonderful, down to earth host and I learned a lot of things I didn't know. Rolly offers first person insights into Walt Disney as a person, leader and imaginer. Congratulations on a job well done. See Rolly and his works while he still graces this Earth!
The humanized, unsanitized, fully realized life story of an Imagineering titan! Too often Disney-related books veer into the overly saccharine or the sensationalized luridness of life at the Mouse House. Rolly Crump and Jeff Heimbuch strike exactly the right note in showing how the magician does his tricks. They fascinate you with the wonder and artistry, and pull back the curtain on the mundane and sometimes crude process behind it.Whole libraries have been written about Disney's more famous animators, but it's rare that we get a glimpse of someone so instrumental to the success of the Disney theme parks. Rolly (a former animator himself) takes his time walking us through Disneyland, sharing not only the obvious triumphs (Haunted Mansion, Small World), but also those obscure details and forgotten projects that we park fans find so fascinating. It also proves that Disney is not the be-all-end-all of themed design. A good portion of the book is dedicated to Rolly's work with Knotts Berry Farm, abandoned theme park ideas, and even random bits of urban Americana. His is an incredible life story. Rolly is the kind of guy who can forget about an entire shopping mall in Texas that he played a part in. He tosses it aside like it was nothing. "Oh yeah, sometimes I wonder how that mall is doing." So fun to read those anecdotes. What a great and important piece of the theme park legacy Walt Disney left behind.
If you don't already love Rolly Crump, you will after reading this book. I was aware of Rolly since I'd seen him in the Disney footage talking to Walt about his "Museum of the Weird/Strange". He seemed affable and likable enough. Why not give his book a try since I was looking for something of interest (Disney). Having been a lover of books in my youth and having read many over the years, I'd stopped reading in the nineties. Far too busy to stop and enjoy a book. This is the first book I read from cover-to-cover, without skipping chapters, in over a decade. What a read! I was riveted and like a trip to Disneyland, savoring every moment, trying to take it all in and not lose any of the importance of what I was reading. And it is an important read if you're a fan of Disney.Rolly himself is as interesting as any character in the Disney archive. We all want to hear every little detail about Walt and his genius, but Rolly, a legend himself, is still very much alive and kicking. With plenty to say, plenty of humor, and plenty of humility, he's just as fascinating. Very clever fellow. He pulls no punches. Versus the typical "disneyfied", watered-down, sugar-coated, version of the truth, this book tells it like it is, but never in a mean or spiteful way, just honest.I particularly loved how he told on Tony Baxter for taking credit for the new ('83) Fantasy Land idea, when it wasn't actually his. I have great respect for Baxter and all he's done, but something has always bugged me about him. I couldn't put my finger on it. Rolly made sure the truth came out and now I understand why I felt the way I did. It's this kind of honesty that makes the book such a nice and refreshing read.Afterall, what's the point of a tell-all if it doesn't tell it like it is? Like it really is. I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone!*Just a note, it isn't a hard cover, but soft cover like a workbook. At first I was a little annoyed, then was very glad it was soft covered. It made it so much easier to read. Also, fantastic photography in the book. Now if you want to know what's in the book, read it!
I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while and when I finally got to it I was not disappointed. This is quick, easy read and a wonderful journey through the life of one of Disney’s legendary imagineers. This book should be a must read for any Disney fan.
This IS a pretty cute story, I love learning about the history of Disneyland and Walt Disney. It was fun to look for Rolly's contributions on our trip to Disneyland.
