Review

“Throughout Still Waters the reader has the pleasure of the author as a teacher, guide, and raconteur. In the tradition of fine nature writing, Stager takes us on an illuminating tangent here and a thrilling side tripe there. Best of all, we get to be scientists with him, venturing out into the world armed with questions and returning home with a smattering of answers, plus a host of new questions to ask....Stager immerses us in the seductive and ever-changing currents of lives in general and the lives of lakes in particular.” - Ed Kanze, Adirondack Explorer“Lyrical...offers geological and biological revelations.” - Nature“Curt Stager is as fine a teacher as I have ever encountered, both in the classroom and on the page. You will learn something new in every paragraph of this book, and the vivid writing will make it stick in your brain. For those of us who love the planet's lakes, this is like a long, cool drink of the freshest water.” - Bill McKibben, author of Radio Free Vermont“Curt Stager is an eloquent storyteller. He not only guides us into the fascinating ecological worlds that dwell within lakes but also demonstrates that our own nature, both biological and cultural, cannot be understood apart from our many interconnections with these living waters.” - David George Haskell, author of The Songs of Trees and The Forest Unseen“Lakes reflect us both literally and metaphorically, in ways shallow and deep. We can see our faces as we peer into their surface. But more deeply, lakes also reflect how the world is changing. Curt Stager has written a deep book about lakes. He peers into deep time, letting lakes tell us what has been, as well as foretelling a bit about who we are becoming.” - Carl Safina, author of A Sea In Flames and Beyond Worlds: What Animals Think and Feel“Curt Stager takes his readers into the depths of ponds, lakes and seas around the globe―both polluted and pristine, ancient and nearly new―and brings alive the universe of life contained within each. Picking up the torch lit by Thoreau more than 150 years ago, Still Waters plumbs a question that vexes ecologists and philosophers alike―Can waters so shaped by human hands ever again be considered 'natural'? His conclusions will surprise as much as they entertain and educate.” - Dan Egan, author of The Death and Life of the Great Lakes“Authoritative.... For a primer on the ‘secret world’ of lakes and for surprising facts and speculations on the microscopic and macroscopic realms―all carefully assembled and presented―the book is an important contribution to understanding how lakes, beyond their singular beauty, are windows to our primal connections to all life.” - Kirkus“An outstanding work of nature and science writing that lingers long after the book is closed. Highly recommended.” - Library Journal (starred review)“This contemplative volume, both informative and poetic, makes good on Stager's intent to 'upgrade' Walden 'for our own century.'” - Publishers Weekly

Perhaps most enjoyable for those who are more interested in Mr. Stager, the author, than in his purported subject, lakes. "I" and "my" are everywhere, and eventually I just got a bit tired of constantly having to cut through the intermediary of the author in order to get to what I'd wanted in his book, a clear study of aspects of lakes. For many people, this may be worth the effort, since when you get there, the information is quite interesting. For me it was tiresome -- I kept thinking "Please get out of the way!!" I'm a big fan of Thoreau's WALDEN and especially his JOURNAL 1837-1861, where the author is obviously present but who constantly keeps the reader attuned to the extraordinary natural world rather than on himself as its reporter. We can't expect everybody to be another Thoreau, but after reading him, this was a big come-down. Read it if you have lots of time and the patience to sift through the self-reflecting surface of the writing and find the pith.

Most of us have had a relationship with one lake or another, but few understand what's happening below the surface, or what has happened to the lake in the past. Stager takes us to unique lakes, along the way dropping morsels of science that are as important as they are clearly presented -- in a single paragraph he provides understanding of complex phenomena without being technical or boring. Stager is not afraid to laugh at himself, which makes these accounts all the more personal and relatable. I'm especially struck by the scientific objectivity and the author's ability to see the real questions, and he clearly respects the value of good science. This book is a must-read for anyone who has seen a lake. Not only will it will change the way the reader sees lakes, it encourages us all to treasure these aquatic jewels for the marvels that they are.

The author can tell a good story, and he tells more than a few, and he provides an incredible amount of information about lakes and what we can learn about our environmental history from them. Definitely recommended.

Good science writing is hard to find - but here it is. The author nails it in this scientific yet entertaining look at lakes - not flinching from the future ahead for lakes in a time of climate change, but not being maudlin about it either.

As a frequent visitor to NY's Adirondack Park, I appreciated the insights the book offered not just on lakes in the Adirondack Park (couple of chapters touched on the region), but on various lakes globally, and the challenging environmental / economic balances that their local communities face. The relationship between humans and the environment can be a controversial subject, and the author handled some difficult topics fairly. The book presents very specialized information in an accessible manner which made it a very pleasant - and educational - read. I had no idea there were such things as “limnologists”, and that study of lakes was an actual field.

With a bit of travelogue tossed in, if that's what you are looking for. Starts with Walden Pondand builds from there, both scientifically and philosophically.

I loved this book. Beautifully and clearly written, carefully researched, and both moving and inspiring. A great read.
