As her title suggests, Angela Lee Chen’s memoir, Standing Out, does indeed reveal her self-discovery journey across three cultures. In 72 short chapters spread over seven parts, she reveals her transition from trying to blend in unnoticed, to finding the courage to blossom as her own person. Self-discovery can present daunting challenges to someone growing up in just one culture, that of their parents and their birth. Angela however, faced three—China, Kenya, and America. And, as happens with TCKs (Third Culture Kids), she flowers as a unique amalgam. Two things surprised me and one thing delighted me about this book.First, memoirs and biographies (Standing Out flirts with a gray area between the two sub-genres) unfold in a more or less chronological fashion with only occasional flashbacks. Standing Out flips that tradition decidedly on its head. Angela treats time as a navigable fluid, traversed easily at will. And she makes it work.Second, as an aviation and speculative fiction writer and reader, I was surprised at how quickly Angela’s story captured me. I sunk into her world(s) completely, frequently empathizing with her cross-cultural experiences—both the insights and the gotchas. And then the delight. I can best describe her writing as smooth. She paints engaging, multi-layered pictures with simple language that I absorbed like a beautiful sunset over the Gettysburg battlefield. For example, when writing about her mother, she says:“The fearlessness she showed in her creations continues to inspire me. That room, with its private window and endless stacks of paper, the oversized desk scattered with works in progress—that room was her dominion, her creation. There she could totally lose herself in her own world, leaving behind all the grief that had gone before.”Read Angela’s book. It will encourage you to choose life’s beauty even in the face of its uglier side.

Evocative descriptions of the many places where the author's life has taken her offer a fascinating, very personal virtual world tour. Her insights into the process of self realization and the intricacies of human relations offer a more subtle tour of the inner world of thought and feeling.

I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Normally it’s difficult to capture my attention. I liked the style this book was written in, and I am almost sad to have finished it!!Enlightening and intriguing, learning about a life well lived and well traveled!Good for young readers, especially I think.

I've read the first few chapters of Ms. Chen's new release "Standing Out" and I'm already delighted to be traveling with her on this very personal journey of cultural , personal and spiritual sharing. She's writes with awareness, clarity and with a perspective that is insightful and honest. Can't wait to continue with her story!

Dr. Chen is a colleague of mine; I’ve known her for fifteen years but never asked her “where she was from.” Perhaps due to our mutual involvement with Chinese herbal medicine, I simply accepted her as Chinese American and enjoyed her spunky personality. Now I find it takes a whole book to explain where she is from.Standing Out is a very entertaining story of a quest for identity that transcends the usual adolescent angst. Angela “goes beyond the adjectives.” Yes, she was born in New York but grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, the daughter of a Chinese diplomat with the United Nations and his artist wife. During the summers they were tourists in the land of their ancestors – climbed the mountains, visited Tibet, shopped in Hong Kong -- always trying to blend in.While typical American high school students might take a class trip to Washington, DC, Angela’s class spent an extended weekend with the Maasai, drinking chai and eating freshly slaughtered goat meat. American families travel to national parks on holiday; for Angela it was Tsavo National Park, or a hunt for wild orchids in Uganda, or a pilgrimage to the Terracotta Army in Xi’an. These vignettes are compelling and often humorous.Filtered through a child’s sensibility, however, this intrepid travel was sometimes alarming or baffling rather than glamorous. Her father was protective but very strict, both parents reserved, and much of personal importance remained unexplained. Angela had to piece together her parents’ background stories once she grew to adulthood and while caring for them through terminal illness. These experiences, including struggles and frustration with the U.S. health care system, seem typically American but for Angela the challenge of going on without parents could feel like being adrift without an anchor. This book is her answer, and it does stand out.Standing Out may be a tonic for those intimidated by current U.S. identity politics. Too much literal mindedness and labeling serve only to divide us. “Going beyond the adjectives” means developing empathy, the ability to easily identify with others and to walk in their shoes. Angela’s life has taught her that the whole human race is her family. And having met her beautiful dog Mani, I suspect Angela goes even further and agrees with Winona LaDuke that family includes “all our relations.”

Loved it. Everything here- travel, love, struggle, life, death. Luggage issues. Little brothers. Even a martial arts showdown. This book is so much more than its description. The writing style and skill is amazing. I can easily recommend this book- you will love it too!

I’m only through the third chapter and loving this book. I began teaching at Nairobi International School the year Angela began school there. Our paths never crossed personally, yet the school and country was such a special place that folks that experienced know they were lucky and have a bond together. My daughter and Angela knew each other and graduated about the same time.Angela is a sensitive writer that I find delightful to read. This is not my usual fare and I’m loving it! My copy is on Kindle and I’m getting a surprise autographed copy for my daughter. Enjoy.
