Good book for reading
Very concise and informative, it allows for greater understanding as all who are part of pastoral care and counseling ministries.
A must read with understanding the new definition of Pastoral Care
An excellent resource for clergy, chaplains and counselors seeking current theological understandings of the practice of care.
This text edited by Ramsay covers the history and trajectory of pastoral care and counseling. It includes chapters on pastoral counseling, public theology, globalization, methodology and clinical ministry training, among others. With regard to the chapters on pastoral counseling and clinical ministry, the text covers material relevant to chaplaincy settings as well as a variety of other contexts, congregational and otherwise. Many of the essays build upon ideas that were present in an earlier volume, Dictionary of Pastoral Care and Counseling, from fifteen years earlier, and develops ideas as contexts for theology and the communities in which theology and pastoral care are practices have changed. For example, in the chapter on "Globalization, Internationalism, and Indigenization," author Emmanuel Lartey explores both global and regional/local examples. "All three may be, and often are, present in any given locale. However, there is not always respect or dialogue between practitioners whose practice could be labeled as exemplifying one or the other." Asian, Indian, Latin American, and "widening European contexts" are all covered here. "The enriching diversity of cultures can only become available within settings where people shaped by different experiences can interact respectfully and truly." There are important insights in this text.
What shocks me is that this book has a 2004 copyright on it. I must assume that the articles in this book were gathered much much earlier as many references in there are very dated (at least a decade or more.)This book was published by Abingdon, who is a small publisher, but typically their books are printed well. This one is ever so reminiscent of a self published book.There doesn't seem to be a coherent thought process throughout the book, but simply a gathering of unrelated articles.I have no idea why this book was published. From a pastoral viewpoint, there isn't anything in here that is useful. From a scholarly standpoint, there are a lot more books that can trace the history of pastoral care an counseling and they do it in a much more cohesive manner.If you are required to purchase this book for any class, you may want to consider changing professors as this book has little value in my humble opinion.Pros: The bibliography is decent - if you like those kinds of things. I actually gave it one star because, throughout its 208 pages, there are about 10 pages that are useful in shining some light onto the history of pastoral care and counseling. I gave it its second star because it is the perfect thickness to stick under the leg of my coffee table to stop its wobbling.Cons: Poorly organized without a coherent thought process. Looks like it was self published about 30 years ago. Many of the contributing articles are obviously dated.
A real boring book...a lot of large words without any focus...is not Biblically based...Based on liberal viewpoint...not on Scripure...
